Museo del Mar Mediterraneo
The Castle of Aci Castello takes the form of a fortress ship that projects into the Mediterranean Sea to mark the history of trade and migratory movements that have characterized it in antiquity.
The OELLE Mediterraneo Antico Foundation has imagined the possibility of creating a project that intends to involve many stakeholders (the Municipality of Aci Castello, the Archaeological Superintendence of Catania, the University of Catania, the Superintendency of the Sea, the Regional Department of Cultural Heritage) to promote a reconstruction of the Mediterranean sea routes through archaeological and historical data in the museum, in the "Parco delle Aci" and in the waters of the Natural Reserve of the Cyclops. the goal is to create an "Archaeological and ethno-anthropological "Museum of the Ancient Mediterranean" that is a unique place for visitors who will thus be able to fully understand the history of trade and migration of peoples, thus becoming a reference also ideal for the socio-cultural and economic development processes of the district.
The revaluation project of the ancient context will develop following the following programming:
Cataloging of archaeological material kept in the Museum;
Creation of a map of all the naval and port finds in the area of the Parco delle Aci and the Ciclopi Natural Reserve;
Reconstruction of the communication routes between Sicily, Africa and the Eastern Mediterranean;
Planning of a new museum system of the emerging Museum of the Mediterranean Sea;
Creation of a website and promotion through the use of the social networks of the Mediterranean Sea Museum;
Collaboration with underwater groups to set up routes to visit the wrecks.
The intention of the Committee is to dedicate the Mediterranean Sea Museum to the archaeologist Sebastiano Tusa, regional councilor for Cultural Heritage and of Sicilian identity, who died tragically on 10 March.
