GaRKAP

GaRKAP

Starting from 2019, the OLLE Mediterranean Ancient Foundation will support the GaRKAP project (ie, Ganja Region Kurgan Archaeological Project) which represents the first joint Italo-Azerbaijani archaeological project in Azerbaijan and which involves, in addition to the Foundation, the CAMNES (Florence), l 'University of Catania, and the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan and is funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The project co-directed by Nicola Laneri and Bakhtiyar Jalilov aims to investigate the tradition of burying the dead in large circular burial mounds covered by a mound of earth and stones (the so-called kurgans) that is typical of the southern Caucasus during a period from the 4th to the 1st millennium BC

In particular, the kurgan of the most ancient period (IV millennium BC) are a visible sign in the territory of the desire to remember generations of deceased placed in a large funeral chamber and then burned before becoming a mausoleum that will be revered by the populations nomads passing along the streets that connected western Azerbaijan with Georgia.
