Collezione Gianfranco Caruso

For Gianfranco Caruso, the idea of a collection is to reiterate an act, an intimate and prolonged action over time, activating a process of knowledge. Through artists, their lives and their material and spiritual representations, Caruso re-knows the world, analyses it, is enveloped and transported in proximity to universes and intimate desires that cannot always materialise in everyday life. Re-knowing the world is not a playful or superficial activity, but implies attention, respect, care for the lives of others, and therefore a redemption. The works of the Caruso collection also invade his work routine, well-kept and technological work spaces, where in the best Italian industrial tradition, the artists' thoughts accompany the daily work flow.

Who is Gianfranco Caruso

The desire to buy works has always been there. Then, little by little, it became an "urgency". So, in the space of a few years the house was filled with works. Today there are no more walls to use and the works end up in the company... I started buying for pleasure. Then, slowly, I realized that I was starting to collect. When they asked me, I replied "come on...". Then I became aware and in fact I understood that the collection went from the early 1950s with the stone islands of Fiume, to the present day.

I started with works by 20th century painters, such as Franz Borghese, Alberto Sughi and the Bueno brothers, and then moved on to contemporary art, purchasing Hugo Canoilas, Ute Müller, Tamás Kaszás. Although I always preferred collecting paintings, I moved on to a more conceptual collecting. In that period we frequented Renzo Spagnoli and his gallery, which was full of works by historical artists such as De Chirico, Rosai, Boetti, Maccari. But I broadened my horizons and realized that there are other forms of expression with which artists communicate their thoughts. I don't understand many of them, others communicate something to me. However, what drives me to acquire a work is only what the work itself transmits to me.
