ECHOES

Caroline Ricca Lee

At Artissima 2024, the Sala Sospesa hosts Caroline Ricca Lee's solo exhibition, produced by Fondazione OELLE: archiving and memory in East Asian narratives in Brazil, with works created in Sicily during her artist residency.

In 2023, the artist was awarded the Premio ISOLA SICILIA, promoted by the OELLE Mediterraneo Antico Foundation, which allowed her to complete a 45-day residency period in Aci Castello, in Catania. During this intense research stay, Caroline was able to observe and deepen her knowledge of the Sicilian population, as rooted in their own traditions as the artist is rooted in the spasmodic search to re-propose hers.

The echo of an ancestral memory is only one aspect of the vast conceptual practice of Carolina Ricca Lee  (1990, San Paolo, Brazil). Starting from inconstant and heterogeneous references accumulated over the years in an immense an-archive, the artist builds a vast imaginary incorporating the most important and crucial conditions to which the contemporary individual is subjected within our – increasingly alienating – digital society. A constant cataloguing of personal and impersonal objects that the artist incorporates into his works in a maximalist perspective: accumulating becomes a necessary practice to trace the ancestral and atavistic origins of our indeterminate identity. Feathers, internal linings of clothes, photographs and objects of all kinds dominate a representation that brings to mind objects. Ricca Lee chooses what is worn out, what has a soul of its own independently of the gesture of man.
