Palazzo della Cultura - Catania

Every epochal change has been marked by the birth of artistic movements that have imprinted those moments in the memory of communities. Indelible signs that, today more than ever, must be a warning for an ethical rebirth of the society of governments and businesses. Overall vision, analysis of the consequences, respect for the environment must be part of the new socio-economic strategies and accompany us even when masks leave room for new views and fears. Sine die is a sign. Thanks to the many who have grasped it, making it visible.

Ornella Laneri

The SINE DIE exhibition, promoted and created by the OELLE Mediterraneo Antico Foundation and co-organized by the Municipality of Catania in the halls of the Palazzo della Cultura, retraces through the eyes of over 100 authors the complex social dynamics that the world is experiencing daily at the time of Coronavirus. The exhibition was strongly desired by Ornella Laneri (President of the OELLE Mediterraneo Antico Foundation) to support, with a unique and international project, the city of Etna deprived of cultural offerings by the health emergency. The OELLE Mediterraneo Antico Foundation has chosen to dedicate economic and organizational resources, in such a difficult moment, to produce a new project/archive that brings together the meaning of these months and of what will come up until vax day. With the SINE DIE exhibition, an unprecedented and international initiative, we choose to support Catania, deprived of cultural offerings by the unexpected and unpredictable events that we all know. For us, Art is memory and vision.

The exhibition and the authors

Printed in 50x70 cm format and each paired with a text by the author, the 122 photographs selected for the exhibition follow one another in the halls of the Palazzo della Cultura in Catania among iconic and exciting images. Starting from the testimony from Bergamo by Mario Cresci (Chiavari, 1942), a master who reinvented photography, elevating it to the rank of visual art. Up to the shot by Michael Christopher Brown (Skagit Valley, Washington, 1978), the famous American photojournalist for National Geographic, Time, New York Times Magazine.
